DRANT #308: VETERANS : DON'T TAKE THE MONEY, START THE HEALING

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In a vast tragic irony, proudly exposing the bleeding sores that evidence our murderous national cancer, Bush spoke for all of Us today when he signed the latest bill funding the war
and said: "Our nation has no greater responsibility than to support our men and women in uniform..."
How terribly terribly painfully murderously true this is, and what a searing if totally unconscious commentary.
Its true: We don't have any greater responsibility. We can't even imagine a greater responsibility.
It's all about Us.
Once again, "our nation" -- which means me and you and your Aunt Betty too- has acted from pure self-interest.
Once again We all have acted as if We have "no greater responsibility" than to----- ourselves.
The War Funding Bill was brilliantly and purposefully packaged by a bipartisan coalition to democratically provide bribes for everyone. And we all took the bribes, and couldn't opt in fast enough.
Little we care, less we even notice, that we have made a pact to commit another year and a half of unspeakable murder and torture on others.
Why should we ? This is all about US, and we got OURS.
Bush definitely got his. He gets to go out in style, unopposed, and heave the dungpile on the next guy's lap.
The Congrassholes got theirs, cause now they can fly home in their private jets, and crow about how they supported the troops, and helped the poor, and the farmers, and created forceful anti-drug programs, and of course, sent money to rebuild the Katrina levees. Right on time, that one.
And We get Ours- cause we're going to get longer unemployment benefits, and we get to feel good about supporting our men and women in uniform, and we get paid for crops we couldn't grow, and dontcha forget the shameful "stimulus" hush money payments.
And the Veterans- they got theirs: a new complement of benefits and programs worth billions.
As the IAVA (Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America) said in an email blast today : "WE DID IT ! " Well, they sure did. We all did.
We have ALL of us made a helluva deal, and all we have to do is commit unspeakable acts on some unpronounceable Arabs for another year or so ? Hey, where do I sign up ?
Well, now that we got ours, and the Veterans got theirs - I wanna know- what are we going to do for the VICTIMS ?
If we think that our Troops suffer - from Post-Traumatic Stress, wounds, disease, destruction of family - what the hell do we think our victims suffer from ? Many of them are victims themselves, but ALL of them are perpetrators.
I am now asking all the Winter Soldiers to step up and put the same all-out effort into forcing Congress to put up billions in reparations -- and begin to make amends for all we have done. I am asking them, and I am asking you and me and all of us.
How perfect it is that we have rushed to the aid of our fellow perpetrators - and have lifted not an eyebrow for our real victims.
How indescribably vile it is that the Veterans' Benefits were appended to the very same bill that continued to fund the ongoing killing. And so, the Veterans supported the bill because THEY got THEIR money- while simultaneously facilitating the next 18 months of murder. And we all did nothing that stopped it.
We are ALL of us perpetrators: we who carried out their orders and did not refuse; who killed because we were told to, and did not refuse; who followed some genocidal testosterone-poisoned code of honor and protected or defended our fellow perpetrators, and did not refuse; who blamed somebody or something else- and did not stand up for ourselves and refuse; and above all others-
We The Complicit, who have achieved exactly nothing by our feeble efforts to stop six years of war and murder and torture, and have exercised no control over our employees in Congress who have taken OUR money and funded and aided and abetted the war and the murder and the torture.
The healing must begin NOW.
And that healing must itself begin with each of us taking full responsibility for what we have done, and dedicating our lives to making amends.
There can be and there will be no healing unless and until this happens.
Step number one: we must ALL refuse to take any of the money that this new bill bestows on us.
Every veteran must refuse to use the money he/she gets from this new bill - and give it instead to our victims.
The veterans can NOT accept the blood money they are getting for having done the killing, while perpetuating the funding of murder.
We need the veterans to show us the way- show Congress and each and every one of US- what we must do.
This can be their greatest and most redeeming mission of honor. This is their monumental and historic chance truly to change the course of the world. They can and must lead us -- to begin the enormous task of healing.
Taking money for evil deeds well done serves only to perpetuate the symbiosis of killing. Turning that money to healing can change the world.
Imagine- thousands of Vets- lining up in front of Congress, with their new benefit checks, announcing that they are taking the money to Iraq or Afghanistan- to bring aid to the victims. And then we see them board the planes. And then we see them re-building homes and hospitals and schools, and repairing the water and electrical systems, and delivering massive medical aid. And we may even see a few of them with individual victims - the very sons and daughters of people they killed or tortured or "detained."
And then, we must ALL join them. For we have not just failed to stop them in their killing, not merely been complicit- we have paid for it, and we have - all of us- been war profiteers- hoarding and spending the trickle-down pecuniary profits of the war economy on ourselves. We each of us, must take our OWN checks, and stand in front of Congress, and follow the model that the Veterans set-- and get the money to our victims.
It is clear that as things now stand, We The People will not rise up, will not stand up on our own, will not change the murderous and inhuman direction we have taken.
I pray that once that spark is lit, and we are shown the path, we will jump and run to follow it.
Please, let the healing begin.
DRANT #301: VICTORY FOR US WAR RESISTERS IN CANADA!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This is a very good beginning. I urge you to access Courage To Resist (www.couragetoresist.org) and join them, donate, help in any way you can.

Many thanks,
DR
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Today the Canadian Parliament made a historic vote in favor of U.S. war resisters who are seeking a safe haven in Canada rather than fight in the illegal occupation of Iraq. The vote in the House of Commons was 137-110, with all the opposition parties - the Liberal Party, the New Democratic Party, the Bloc Quebecois and the Green Party - voting for the motion, and the ruling Conservative Party voting against.
The Parliament calls on the minority Conservative government to create a program that will allow war resisters to immigrate to Canada, and it also calls for a halt to all deportation proceedings.
This is a VERY BIG victory for war resisters in Canada and everywhere. It will strengthen our hand considerably.
But the struggle for sanctuary in Canada is far from over. The Conservative government, a staunch ally of the Bush administration, may choose to defy the will of the Canadian people by ignoring this advisory motion.
Corey Glass, an Iraq veteran and war resister, was recently ordered to leave Canada by June 12 or face deportation.
So even as we celebrate this victory, we must step up the pressure on Prime Minister Stephen Harper and Immigration Minister Diane Finley. [See action alert from War Resisters Support Campaign, below, along with their press release and a news article.]
Yes, it does help for the Canadian government to hear from many people in the U.S. who want them to provide sanctuary for our war resisters. Courage To Resist (www.couragetoresist.org ) has generated thousands of letters from people in the U.S. to Canadian government and political leaders and these have clearly helped, as have the vigils and delegations to the Canadian Embassy in Washington and Canadian Consulates around the U.S.
Project Safe Haven, a network of Vietnam War resisters who are supporting war resisters today, is calling for people to contact Canadian representatives in the U.S. this week.
* THANK the Canadian people and their Parliament for supporting our war resisters.
* CALL on the Conservative government to follow the will of the Canadian people and implement this motion.
* DEMAND an end to deportation proceedings against Corey Glass and other war resisters
You can visit the Canadian Consulate in person. In Seattle, we will have a Celebration outside of the Canadian Consulate, 1501 4th Ave. at Pike St., on Thursday, June 5, at noon. There will also be vigils and delegations in several other cities.
And you can call them, fax them, or email them.
Canadian Consular offices are in over 20 U.S. cities. Here are their addresses, phone numbers, and email addresses. http://geo.international.gc.ca/can-am/washington/offices/default-en.asp
If you want to participate in visits to the Canadian Embassy or Consulates, please send an email to projectsafehaven@hotmail.com or call Gerry Condon at 206-499-1220.
If you are a member of Iraq Veterans Against the War or Veterans For Peace, you may want to get in touch with your local chapter or national office to let them know you want to participate, and to help organize these events.
U.S. war resisters and their wonderful Canadian supporters have won a historic victory. By acting decisively at this time, we in the U.S. can participate in this victory and help to make it an even bigger one.
Thank you for whatever you may be able to do at this time.
for peace and justice,
Gerry Condon
War Resister Corey Glass Faces Deportation
U.S. Iraq war resister Corey Glass was told on May 21, 2008, that his application to stay in Canada has been rejected and he now faces deportation. Glass would be the first Iraq war resister to be deported from Canada. Last December the House of Commons' Standing Committee on Citizenship & Immigration passed a motion calling on the Canadian government to "immediately implement a program to allow conscientious objectors and their immediate family members […] to apply for permanent resident status and remain in Canada; and … the government should immediately cease any removal or deportation actions … against such individuals".
House of Commons votes to let U.S. War Resisters stay in Canada
OTTAWA, June 3 /CNW/ - The Opposition parties in the House of Commons joined together today to adopt a recommendation which, if implemented, would make it possible for U.S. Iraq War resisters to obtain Permanent Resident status in Canada.
The recommendation was adopted by a majority of Members of Parliament from the Liberal, Bloc Québécois, and New Democratic Parties. The Conservatives voted against the motion.
The motion, which originated in the House of Commons Standing Committee on Citizenship and Immigration in December 2007, calls on the government to "immediately implement a program to allow conscientious objectors and their immediate family members...to apply for permanent resident status and remain in Canada; and...the government should immediately cease any removal or deportation actions...against such individuals."
Corey Glass, 25, a war resister who came to Canada in 2006 and was recently told to leave Canada by June 12 or face removal to the United States, welcomed the vote. "I'm thankful that the MPs voted to let me and the other war resisters stay in Canada. I'm also thankful to all the Canadians who urged their MPs to support us."
"This is a great victory for the courageous men and women who have come to Canada because they refuse to take part in the illegal, immoral Iraq War, and for the many organizations and individuals who have supported this campaign over the past four years," said Lee Zaslofsky,
Coordinator of the War Resisters Support Campaign and a Vietnam War deserter who came to
Canada in 1970.
The War Resisters Support Campaign is calling on the Conservative government to respect the democratic decision of the Canadian Parliament and immediately implement the motion and cease deportation proceedings against Corey Glass and other war resisters.
DRANT #293: OUR WAR
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This is not Bush's War. This is not the Neo-Cons' War. This is not The War of The Military Industrial Combobulated Cartel, or The Schmuck Pimp Media, or The Complicit Congress' War.
This war is ours. The murders are ours. We have done this, and we have not stopped it, and still it goes on.
And it is not one war, but one of many being waged by Us on millions of defenseless victims all over the Earth; war on the poorest and weakest of the people of the world, and all over The USA.
I don't want to hear another word about how hard it has been for US. How difficult it is to be a soldier, or how hard it is to pay the mortgage, or how expensive gas is. This is not about US. It is about our victims.
This is OUR War, and we are not the victims but the perpetrators.
And so far we have done nothing that has impeded it for a minute, much less put a stop to it.
Today, hundreds of thousands of us are in the streets, but little it will matter unless the millions of us who are doing nothing rise up.
You can join us, or you can do nothing, and wait for Obama to do it for you.
This is YOUR WAR. You did it. You continue to do it, and you must stop whatever you are doing to stop it- NOW.
The day has just begun.
There is still some daylight left to seek some small crumb of redemption.
Off your ass my friend. Quit the office or the classroom or the house, get into the street, and do whatever you can - or do nothing.
They are counting on it.

Michael Prysner's testimony at Winter Soldier
Watch the video below!

"We were told we were fighting terrorism... The real terrorism was this occupation... I threw families onto the street in Iraq only to come home and see families thrown onto the street in this country in this tragic and unnecessary foreclosure crisis... Our enemy is not 5,000 miles away: they are right here at home." -- Michael Prysner

In the must-watch video below, Iraq war veteran and ANSWER organizer Michael Prysner retells his horrifying responsibilities as an occupation soldier, and denounces the Army officers who used racism and bigotry in order to justify the oppression of the Iraqi people. Prysner's eloquent and compelling testimony cuts through the Pentagon's propaganda and exposes the truth of the Iraq occupation -- please circulate this video to your friends, family members, classmates, co-workers and listservs.

Prysner joined the U.S. Army at age 17 and in March 2003, he was deployed to northern Iraq. He remained there for 12 months. Bearing witness to the many crimes of the occupation, Prysner became a staunch opponent of the war, and in 2005 he began organizing and speaking out against it. The four-day Winter Soldier event was organized by Iraq War Veterans Against the War.

US-UK-Australian Iraqi Holocaust And Iraqi Genocide
By Dr Gideon Polya
http://www.countercurrents.org/polya190308.htm

On the 5th anniversary of the illegal, war criminal, Australian, UK and US invasion of Iraq we see an ongoing Iraqi Holocaust and Iraqi Genocide - post-invasion non-violent and violent excess deaths 1.7-2.2 million, post-invasion under-5 infant deaths 0.6 million, and 4.5 million refugees out of a current population of about 28 million i.e. about one quarter of Iraqis dead or homeless

The Only Lesson We Ever Learn
Is That We Never Learn

By Robert Fisk
http://www.countercurrents.org/fisk190308.htm

And I will hazard a terrible guess: that we have lost Afghanistan as surely as we have lost Iraq and as surely as we are going to "lose" Pakistan. It is our presence, our power, our arrogance, our refusal to learn from history and our terror – yes, our terror – of Islam that is leading us into the abyss. And until we learn to leave these Muslim peoples alone, our catastrophe in the Middle East will only become graver. There is no connection between Islam and "terror". But there is a connection between our occupation of Muslim lands and "terror". It's not too complicated an equation. And we don't need a public inquiry to get it right

DRANT #292: HAPPY ANNIVERSARY

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
March 16- Happy Anniversary everyone.
March 16 1935: Flush with massive Anglo-American funding, Hitler himself flushes The Versailles Treaty down the Toiletteschussel, and general conscription begins in Germany. By 1939, the world is fighting The Wehrmacht in the "good war."
March 16, 1968: My Lai. Few remember that it was Major Colin Powell, now a world-famous mendacious mass murderer, but then a fledgling oreo yazzaboss, who was sent in to cover up the mess. He did such a good job of lying and obfuscation, that he was promoted, and you know the rest of dat one--
March 16, 1988: Halabja is gassed. The Kurds know it was Donald Rumsfeld who gave the nerve gas to Saddam, but most Americans still don't.
March 16, 2003: Millions of us around the world marched and demonstrated and performed direct actions and vigils and prayers to stop The USA from attacking Iraq. But the plans had been in place for years, and they weren't about to turn back now. Plus, it would only take a few weeks....
and also March 16, 2003: Rachel Corrie put her frail young 23 year old body on the line, to stop yet another atrocity by the Israeli invaders, and became yet another of the tens of thousands of victims of Israeli genocide.
March 16, 2008: The Winter Soldier testimony ended in Silver Spring MD.
And on March 19, 2008 - thousands of people will act to stop the killing. All over the world, people are rising up to do whatever they are capable of doing. More than 500 local actions in the USA alone.
Will you be there ? Or will you find another reason not to do a goddamned thing ?
They're counting on it.
DRANT #260: UPDATE: A GATHERING OF SCUM
To follow up on previous email re: the cowards who physically attacked Carlos Arredondo -- the following has been provided by Melida Arredondo, to whom we are very grateful.
It's the whole true story, including first-person eyewitness accounts, video footage, journalist's accounts, and background information on the assailants and their Brown Shirt Organization The Gathering Of Eagles, plus actual hate-filled postings and accounts on the GOE site.
Dad Attacked for Pulling Memorial Honoring Marine Son Killed In Iraq
Washington, DC - On 09/15/07, a pro war protester defaced a rolling memorial to a fallen Marine by ripping a secured picture off of it. Carlos Arredondo passed by with this display at the end of a peace march. When Arredondo went to retrieve the picture, he was assaulted by five or six pro war protesters. According to many witnesses on the scene, Arredondo was then kicked repeatedly by the pro war protesters for wanting to retrieve the picture until the police showed up.
The memorial honors Lcpl. Alexander Scott Arredondo from Boston, MA who was killed on 08/25/04. Carlos Arredondo is his father and has traveled throughout the United States making sure that the citizens of the US do not forget Alex and the costs of war.
Carlos chooses to honor the death of his son Alex by pulling a memorial consistinf of a flag draped coffin, boots, poster sized pictures, a Massachusetts Gold Star license plate and the copy of a street sign that the City of Boston named after Alex. "I don't want my son to simply be a statistic. I want people to know who he was" states Arredondo.
The man who defaced the memorial, Fred Peterson wrote that when he "saw the photo-image of a proud young Marine in dress blues being held hostage in company not of his own choosing and affixed to a coffin not his own...[he] liberated his image from the midst of the hostile crowd." (1)
Carlos Arredondo has been in DC during September meeting with elected officials, attending press conferences and hearings related to the war in Iraq and displaying the memorial of his son. He sets up the memorial and often steps aside. Arredondo watches and states that "Many people want to find out more information on what they are seeing. That's when I introduce myself, tell them about Alex and give them a copy of one of the letters that Alex wrote while he was deployed." " It's important not to forget that Alex died so we can all live in peace and that if the US had remained peaceful, he would be alive today," says Arredondo.
This event has hit internet blog and news sites repeatedly since 09/15/07. Only recently, have web-activists interested in supporting Arredondo provided him with pictures and film footage of the attack.
Possible Information on Fred Peterson - Man who Took Picture off Memorial
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Quote of the day:
"Under the influence of politicians, masses of people tend to ascribe the responsibility for wars to those who wield power at any given time. In World War I it was the munitions industrialists; in World War II it was the psychopathic generals who were said to be guilty. This is passing the buck.

The responsibility for wars falls solely upon the shoulders of these same masses of people, for they have all the necessary means to avert war in their own hands. In part by their apathy, in part by their passivity, and in part actively, these same masses of people make possible the catastrophes under which they themselves suffer more than anyone else. To stress this guilt on the part of the masses of people, to hold them solely responsible, means to take them seriously. On the other hand, to commiserate masses of people as victims, means to treat them as small, helpless children. The former is the attitude held by genuine freedom fighters; the latter that attitude held by power-thirsty politicians."

DRANT #258: LIVE FROM DC: SEPT. 15, 2007

Iraq war veteran Geoff Millard, 26, of Columbia Heights wore fatigues and clutched an American flag as he lay on the ground before he was arrested.
"It's time for the peace movement to take the next step past protest and to resistance," said Millard, president of D.C. chapter of Iraq Veterans Against the War.
~~~~~~~
Army veteran Justin Cliburn, 25, of Lawton, Okla., was among a contingent of Iraq veterans in attendance. "We're occupying a people who do not want us there," Cliburn said of Iraq. "We're here to show that it isn't just a bunch of old hippies from the 60s who are against this war."
~~~~~~~

"It's TIME... It's time to lay our bodies on the line and say we've had enough," (Cindy Sheehan) said. "It's time to shut this city down."

~~~~~~~
“...This is our lunch counter moment for the 21st Century... If we fail to show up, and fulfill our destiny, then not only will the blood of so many innocent Iraqi civilians be on our hands, but our generation will be known throughout history, as the generation of least resistance.”
- Rev. Lennox Yearwood, President, Hip Hop Caucus
~~~~~~~
Like many yesterday, Deborah Johns, the mother of a sergeant who has served three tours in Iraq, raised the Vietnam War for comparison.
"We're not going to let the domestic enemy here at home defeat us like they did then," she said. "No retreat, no surrender. Not now, not ever."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
LIVE from DC: The Insurrection at The Capitol
(The following includes a first person account of what happened, plus numerous VIDEO clips showing the events.)
It's me again. I just got out of Jail, and I can't wait to tellya all about it.
Your Old Hippie from the 60s, ponytail firmly in place, medicare card in my back pocket -- I'm here to give all of ya a first person, hands on, no kiddin, eyeball to eyeball, start to finish account of what happened yesterday, September 15, 2007, when I joined tens of thousands of people at the Demonstration, Direct Action and Resistance in Washington DC.
There was no way I was gonna show up at another bullshit demo, with the cute t shirts and witty signs, and hours of speeches about every injustice on the planet. No way I was interested in going to another reunion of the class of '67.
If this one didn't include some serious resistance, and mass civil disobedience, I was staying home with my Chambers Brothers LPs.
This one had to be different.
Now of course, there was plenty that was the same. A lot of obsolete A.N.S.W.E.R. stuff, sung to the melody of "Let's March Again, Like We Did Last Summer."
Signs and speeches, pamphlets, tshirts, slogans and dress up, lotsa grey hair, a Rally and even We Shall Overcome.
But ..........
This one was different.
This one was different because they key event, a mass Die In at The U.S. Capitol, was not controlled by the old leftie apparatchiks (like me f'rinstance). The key elements were built instead on the energy of the young people upon whom we must truly rely if change is to come.
Yeah, there was plenty of the sameoldsameold. But this time- the spearhead- physically energetically and spiritually- wasn't old Hippies, but our grandchildren- the new SDS and other verrrry youthful organizations, and most of all, the Iraq Veterans Against The War. (IVAW).
If you want the true test on how crucial and vital was the IVAW, the giveaway is that The Washington Post barely admits they existed, and the New York Times not at all. That proves it. The old media painted this as just another snore, with the same old players.
The IVAW is led by U.S. Marine Sergeant Adam Kokesh, an Iraq vet whose ramrod posture and 400 pound bench press body tell ya just about all ya need to know. A man who backs down from nothing, and stands up for everything he believes in.
"...We have come to a point in history when our government’s intents are so far from the will of the people that we have to rise up!
WHEN INJUSTICE BECOMES LAW, RESISTANCE BECOMES DUTY! ... "
"Today marks a turning point for our movement. Today we make the shift from protesting to direct action. Today we begin to restore the rightful order in our democracy. Today is the day the people stop fearing the government, and the government starts fearing the people!
Today may very well mark the beginning of the American anti-fascism revolution. March with us. Honor the dead with us. If you are willing to risk arrest, lie in the street, if not, lie in the grass. Die-in when you hear the air raid sirens. Raise your voice and your fist with us in defiance to send a message to our leadership. If you will not make peace for us, we will make it for ourselves! Power to the people! "
(Kokesh speech delivered at the Rally September 15.)
The Plan was-- to Rally at Lafayette Park, then form up on 15th and Pennsylvania- and have the IVAW in a single column leading first the Veterans For Peace (VFP) and then the ENTIRE vast sea of marchers down Penn Ave. to The Capitol. At The Capitol, thousands were to join in a Die In at the Peace Monument, perform civil disobedience and resistance, refuse to move, and be arrested en masse.
I was fortunate enough to be invited to join the VFP front line of security. Our job was to form a phalanx of protection for the IVAW and VFP flank as the march proceeded, and then to form a circle of protection for them when the die in happened.
This left me in the best spot - the very front of the march, often literally hand in hand with my friends from VFP, in step with the IVAW, and frequently nose to nose and belly to belly with the misguided and brainwashed but dangerous and ugly Pro War Demonstrators, largely the nefarious and CIA funded Gathering of Eagles. The Police made sure that our march headed straight into the teeth of the pro war gauntlet, where they accosted us from both sides.(see quote from Deb Johns above. This was sadly and frighteningly typical).
(Complicit Tools that they are, the focus of the Pimp Press, with bigtime assistance from The Cops, was to promote the conflicts and divisions between us, 1- bestowing the Counter Protesters with equal Gravitas and much more than equal space though they numbered maybe 1000 to our tens of thousands ---- and 2- publishing photos portraying the anti war groups as the usual old beatnik fringe. The house pet Dinosaur Press unrelentlingly casts us as the domestic Sunni and Shiia, and the more "sectarian violence" the better.)
Maybe the pro warrists could despise us peaceniks, but what could they scream at the IVAW members, some of them actual Active Reserve ?
The presence of these men and women in their combat camouflage, people just like their own husbands and sons and mothers and daughters, confronted the pro war people with the clear and undeniable reality that many people who had BEEN THERE saw the War for what is was, and were publicly proclaiming the murderous actions of themselves, their buddies and comrades, their commanders, The Congress who provided the funds, the U.S. Government, and the Commander In Chief. There it was in their face-- not the railings of "A.N.S.W.E.R. Commies" (their nickname for us) but-- the undeniable truth, spoken by undeniable witnesses.
The Veterans restated their Oath of allegiance to defend the Constitution against ALL enemies ("foreign and domestic, especially domestic")
Sgt. Kokesh marched alongside his column, and as they marched they chanted the cadence- "Who Are WE?" "We are THE TROOPS" "How Do You SUPPORT US ?" "Bring US HOME!" ----
We reached the Capitol Grounds, but instead of gathering around the Peace Monument, The Cops shuttled us to the left, where our ranks, previously 18-25 across, had to narrow down to 5 or 6 across, and walk through grass and dirt, disjointed and exposed. (Check the map by accessing http://www.homeandabroad.com/c/15/Site/71670_Peace_Monument_visit.html and clicking VIEW MAP.)
In what I think was an ambush, we ended up separated from the main contingent, who were massed behind us on the Capitol lawn. Our smaller group was pushed forward into a long rectangular area, surrounded and enclosed by trees, and into a dead end-- where some stone steps led up a narrow opening in a concrete and stone wall fronting the large stone Entry Plaza to The Capitol building.
The Cops were waiting for us behind steel barricades, in full riot gear: Darth Vader helmets and full body armor.
Initially, a few brave souls jumped the barricades and submitted to arrest, and more joined them.
The signal for the die-in was given (an air raid siren) and the people began to lie down. The cops didn't move, staying behind their barricades.
After a long standoff, Adam Kokesh spoke to the massed crowd on the lawn, Brian Becker of ANSWER jumped up on the stone wall, and leaped over the barricade into the police line, and was followed immediately by Kokesh, the IVAW contingent, the amazing Col. Ann Wright,
and then hundreds of others, including Code Pink and your old hippie pal.
Out of tens of thousands, a few hundred jumped, and got arrested. No one can dispute the bravery of those who leaped into the police lines, nor can we doubt the motives.
But - though I participated fully, and am proud of doing so- I think it was misguided and counter productive.
What we needed to do was STAY on the ground. Lie down and not get up. Refuse to move. If it took hours or days, we should have lain, unmoving and resistant, and forced the police to come and get us, drag us off, one by one. We should never have gone to them.
We needed Gandhi as our model, not the Military. We needed to perform true passive resistance, and not literally jump into the arms of the opposition. We needed to STOP BUSINESS AS USUAL.
"Strength does not come from physical capacity. It comes from an indomitable will."
Adam Kokesh is a smart and brave man, (my respect and admiration for him are obvious in the above) and what he has accomplished -- along with his incredible organization, cannot be praised highly enough. But Adam and ALL of us need to learn -- that confrontation does not mean aggression, that the tactics of The Police and the Military should not be used in our cause. We should never have jumped the wall. We should STILL be lying down, STILL be on the concrete, and not become impatient or aggressive but implacably unmovably passive -- thus to create true resistance.
Passive resistance takes more courage than physical confrontation. Its easy to get pissed off, and want to ACT. Being brainwashed by American education media and society, we come to believe that ACTION means DOING something. But Gandhi knew that dedicated masses doing NOTHING is the most forceful and effective method for gaining change. By using Police methods, by invading, attacking, trespassing, we became Them, and ultimately we failed.
"You must be the change you want to see in the world."
We desperately need the energy and will, and yes the physical presence and strength of the IVAW, and all the other young people who must now take over the movement. But I pray that they can see the bigger picture, and throw off their conditioning and training from American schools, homes, TV shows, and military field manuals.
People say that Sept. 15 was a turning point. And I agree.
We must now make it a turning point for a new set of tactics, where true resistance can be achieved.
We must take to the streets, as Adam and Cindy and Rev Yearwood have all said. We MUST.
But what do we do when we GET there ? Do we storm the police stations ? Do we throw rocks at the windows of Bechtel's offices ?
Do we invade CONGRESS to demand their help ?
None of the above.
Congress is THEM, and both Parties are complicit and participatory. One does not demand that Co Conspirators end The Conspiracy.
Forget Congress.
We must begin true resistance, we must take to the streets, and lie down in the streets, and stop ALL business as usual, everywhere we can, for as long as we can.
Our target is not Congress, or Bush, or Petraeus. The target is US.
WE must reach The People, and bring the question to THEM.
In their home towns, in their offices, in their schools, in their counting houses.
For us to be successful we must renounce the methods of our Oppressors, and take on the ways of Gandhi and King.
Passive mass resistance, everywhere we can.
Imagine if no one had jumped over the wall, and hundreds if not thousands of us were STILL lying down in front of the Capitol as you read this.
How much easier it is to get masses of people to join in when the tactic is passive resistance. How much more effective and enduring is unending resistance.
No more of the same old fruitless ways- marches, rallies, signs, jumping into the arms of the police, or demanding morally correct action from our enemies.
The old ways lead to the old results.
Let's use our new strength and our new momentum to do those things that can truly bring change.
Tomorrow- I'll continue- with the story of what happened to us once we were thrown to the ground, arrested, hand cuffed, and treated like AbuGhraibians.
100,000 March Against Iraq War in Washington
200 Arrested in Dramatic Mass Die-In
Yesterday, nearly 100,000 people -- led by anti-war Iraq veterans, military families and others -- marched from the White House to the Capitol in Washington, D.C. to demand an immediate end to the occupation of Iraq. The march concluded with a dramatic "die-in" of 5,000 people surrounding the Capitol. Almost 200 people were arrested when police prevented them taking an anti-war message to Congress.
People marched shoulder-to-shoulder on eight-lane-wide Pennsylvania Avenue, with the densely packed march stretching more than 10 blocks. It was a historic action and a step forward for the anti-war movement.
Protesters surged onto the Capitol's south lawn and up the steps where they were met by a police line. There, Iraq veterans conducted a solemn ceremony to memorialize the U.S. soldiers and Iraqis killed in the war. Over 5,000 people then lay down in a symbolic "die-in" -- one of the largest acts of civil disobedience in recent years.
One hundred ninety-seven people, including dozens of veterans and activists, were arrested when they tried to deliver their anti-war message to Congress and were stopped by the police. Among the arrested were Adam Kokesh, Liam Madden, Jeff Millard, and Garrett Reppenhagen of Iraq Veterans Against the War; Brian Becker, National Coordinator of the ANSWER Coalition; Ann Wright, former U.S. Army Colonel; Michael Prysner, Iraq war veteran and ANSWER activist in Florida; union president Gloria La Riva; and Eugene Puryear, Howard University student and National Coordinator of Youth & Student ANSWER.
Police pepper-sprayed demonstrators without provocation.
This mass action came on the heels of the pro-war Petraeus report to Congress and Bush's wholehearted endorsement of the report. Meanwhile, the war rages on, destroying Iraqi society. Nearly 4,000 U.S. solidiers and up to 1 million Iraqis have died since the U.S. invasion in March 2003.
Thousands March in D.C. War Protest
By Matthew Barakat
WASHINGTON (AP) — Several thousand anti-war demonstrators marched through downtown Washington on Saturday, clashing with police at the foot of the Capitol steps where at least 160 protesters were arrested. The group marched from the White House to the Capitol to demand an end to the Iraq war. Their numbers stretched for blocks along Pennsylvania Avenue, and they held banners and signs and chanted, "What do we want? Troops out. When do we want it? Now." Army veteran Justin Cliburn, 25, of Lawton, Okla., was among a contingent of Iraq veterans in attendance.
"We're occupying a people who do not want us there," Cliburn said of Iraq. "We're here to show that it isn't just a bunch of old hippies from the 60s who are against this war." Counterprotesters lined the sidewalks behind metal barricades. There were some heated shouting matches between the two sides. The arrests came after protesters lay down on the Capitol lawn in what they called a "die in" — with signs on top of their bodies to represent soldiers killed in Iraq. When police took no action, some of the protesters started climbing over a barricade at the foot of the Capitol steps. Many were arrested without a struggle after they jumped over the waist-high barrier. But some grew angry as police with shields and riot gear attempted to push them back. At least two people were showered with chemical spray. Protesters responded by throwing signs and chanting: "Shame on you."
The number of arrests by Capitol Police on Saturday was much higher than previous anti-war rallies in Washington this year. Five people were arrested at a protest outside the Pentagon in March when they walked onto a bridge that had been closed off to accommodate the demonstration, then refused to leave. And at a rally in January, about 50 demonstrators blocked a street near the Capitol, but they were dispersed without arrests. The protesters gathered earlier Saturday near the White House in Lafayette Park with signs saying "End the war now" and calling for President Bush's impeachment. The rally was organized by the ANSWER Coalition and other groups.
Organizers estimated that more than 100,000 people attended the rally and march. That number could not be confirmed; police did not give their own estimate. But there appeared to be tens of thousands of people in attendance. Anti-war activist Cindy Sheehan told the crowd is was time to be assertive. "It's time to lay our bodies on the line and say we've had enough," she said. "It's time to shut this city down."
About 13 blocks away, nearly 1,000 counterprotesters gathered near the Washington Monument, frequently erupting in chants of "U-S-A" and waving American flags.Retired Air Force Lt. Col. Robert "Buzz" Patterson, speaking from a stage to crowds clad in camouflage, American flag bandanas and Harley Davidson jackets, said he wanted to send three messages. "Congress, quit playing games with our troops. Terrorists, we will find you and kill you," he said. "And to our troops, we're here for you, and we support you."
DRANT #214: DU R US
"...How to explain the exploding rates of cancer, birth defects, and radiation poisoning among Iraqis in the Basra region? How to explain a Department of Veterans Affairs study of 21,000 veterans of the Gulf War that found rates of birth defects were twice as great for male vets and three times as great for female vets who served in the Gulf War compared to vets who did not? How to explain a Washington Post report in January of 2006 that 518,00 of the 580,000 Gulf War veterans were on disability, over half on permanent disability. How to explain over 13,000 dead Gulf War veterans when only 250 were killed and 7,000 injured in the war itself?..."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Bring the troops home now- very good. Badda da DUM.
Then what ?
The USA has finally just taken its very first miniscule steps to accepting any responsibility for the vast and deadly effects of Agent Orange -- used to such deadly effect on the Vietnamese and on our own troops in Vietnam. They have loudly dropped a tiny drop in an oceanic bucket, slavishly covered by the pimp media of course.
1991 Gulf War vets are still being denied medical care and coverage and benefits - for DU, for Gulf War "syndrome," for Anthrax vaccine poisoning....
We have never accepted any responsibility for the use of DU in Kosovo, and you better believe that Israel won't take any for Lebanon ---
Not to forget that when we "bring the troops home," they will be leaving mountains of deadly genocidal inhumanly destructive radioactive debris behind, and -- they'll be bringing plenty of it home with them as well.

The Questions

I live a few miles from an ATK (Alliant Tech) plant that produces depleted uranium (DU) tank shells for the military. Tank shells destroy and kill, and they, along with all military hardware, are a constant reminder of our failure as a civilization. But DU weapons and tank shells are only two of many items that raise questions that even our violence prone society needs to address. Since shortly after Gulf War I, soldiers and civilians have been questioning the safety of these weapons which are made of radioactive material. The more questions raised, the more the military-industrial complex has hauled out studies showing the safety of DU munitions. One CEO called DU the "skim milk" of uranium in an article penned for my local paper. An Air Force officer is even stalking the internet, trying to intimidate anyone who suggests DU is anything but benign.

Yet the numbers suggested that something insidious happens when DU munitions are used. How to explain the exploding rates of cancer, birth defects, and radiation poisoning among Iraqis in the Basra region? How to explain a Department of Veterans Affairs study of 21,000 veterans of the Gulf War that found rates of birth defects were twice as great for male vets and three times as great for female vets who served in the Gulf War compared to vets who did not? How to explain a Washington Post report in January of 2006 that 518,00 of the 580,000 Gulf War veterans were on disability, over half on permanent disability. How to explain over 13,000 dead Gulf War veterans when only 250 were killed and 7,000 injured in the war itself?

Finally, through the work of internationally recognized research scientist, Dr. Rosalie Bertell, we may have an answer to these questions. The answer has to do with using an analytical methodology appropriate to low level radiation, as opposed to inappropriate methodologies used to date that show DU is harmless, and, equally important, understanding that DU has both a radiological component as well as a heavy metal component, and the two in combination are far more toxic than either is singly.

What is DU and Why Is It a Problem?

Depleted Uranium (DU) is the waste left after the isotope uranium-235 (used for bombs and nuclear reactors) has been removed. DU (mostly U-238) makes up the largest amount of radioactive waste other than uranium mining waste worldwide and has a half-life of 4.5 billion years. In the United States, DU can only be handled by persons trained in radiation safety procedures. DU must also be isolated from the environment.

Much of the scientific evaluation of uranium oxide has come from analysis of uranium mining and milling, but this ignores a major fact-that battlefield uranium oxide is very different from uranium oxide produced at normal temperatures. When a DU shell hits a hardened target, it bursts into flame and creates an invisible metal fume, often called an aerosol. (Tests carried out eight to ten years after Gulf War I found that the DU aerosol from the battlefield had been carried to Basra and Baghdad, though no fighting occurred in those areas.)

Aerosolizing DU involves temperatures between 3,000 and 6,000 degrees centigrade, which turn the oxide into a nano-sized ceramic particle that is insoluble in body fluids. If these nano particles are inhaled, they provide contact radiation and a source of heavy metal poisoning. These high temperatures will also aerosolize other heavy metals in the area such as steel, nickel, aluminum, and iron, which can be inhaled. Nano-sized uranium oxide [along with other metals] is roughly the size of a virus [scientifically: nanometer-sized], invisible, able to penetrate the lung-blood barrier and can be carried throughout the body. Nano particles can reach sensitive targets, including the lymph nodes, spleen, heart, and access to the central nervous system.

Uranium-238 is an alpha particle emitter. The range of these alpha particles is only about six cells; therefore, it is highly localized. Because DU has less radioactivity than natural uranium, many consider DU to be low-level radiation and not harmful to people. But research does not bear this view out.

Assessing the Effects of DU

A major problem with most DU assessment is that many effects of alpha radiation on cell structure, including DNA proteins that release biochemical signals and important cell metabolic enzymes, are ignored by nuclear physicists who use dose estimates based on uranium dust in mines, a completely inappropriate approach for a battlefield aerosol. Many medical professionals believe the protein problem is responsible for various neurodegenerative diseases evidenced by Gulf War veterans.

As Dr. Bertell writes, "Heavy metal exposure (including uranium) can cause loss of cellular immunity, autoimmune diseases, joint disease such as rheumatoid arthritis, and diseases of the kidneys, circulatory system, and nervous system.... Decline in functional mitochondria is most damaging to the heart, kidney, brain, liver, and skeletal muscle, in that order." Loss of cellular immunity opens an organism up to viral, bacterial, and mycoplasmal invasions connected to a variety of diseases.

Equally important, scientists have found that tiny amounts of DU too small to be toxic and only mildly radioactive seem to reinforce each other in terms of causing cancers and risk to offspring. The Armed Forces Radiobiological Research Institute has even admitted that DU can cause cancer.

Humans are normally exposed to about 1.9 micrograms of uranium a day in food and water, with between one and two percent absorbed. The rest is passed in feces. Humans screen natural uranium quite effectively. But our screening system won't eliminate nano particles that are ceramic and enter through the lungs. These particles won't dissolve and won't lose their radioactivity.

International Condemnation

The special investigator of the UN Sub-Committee on the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights has declared DU munitions illegal under existing humanitarian law. DU weapons also produce a toxic metal fume that violates the Geneva Protocol on the Use of Gas in War, which the US signed in 1975.

Why Ignore the Evidence?

We have enough evidence to suggest with considerable certainty that DU munitions break the four basic laws and customs that govern modern weapons use: that the weapon is confined to the battlefield, that it does not kill after a battle is over, that it doesn't cause inhumane suffering, and that it doesn't have a negative effect on the natural environment. We certainly have enough evidence to stop using these weapons until further research by independent scientists has been done. And yet we continue to produce, sell, and use DU munitions. How can this be justified?

Perhaps looking at the paradigm of Agent Orange gives insight. Our government ignored veterans affected by Agent Orange for thirty years before admitting Agent Orange was, in fact, the cause of many physical problems endured by Vietnam veterans. By then, the most seriously affected veterans were dead. The government incurred a far smaller financial liability than if the government had owned up to the problems earlier.

If the government ever admitted what it has done in Iraq-between 1,000 and 2,000 tons of DU ordnance expended according to most estimates-the financial consequences, not to mention the moral outrage engendered, is almost beyond imagination. Cleaning up the DU blanketing Iraq would entail enormous costs. And in a few years, soldiers who have served in the current debacle-many with two or three tours-are going to start coming down with the same diseases that have struck Gulf War I veterans. Some who got good doses of DU have already seen their lives ruined by multiple physical problems.

We must also consider the real possibility of Iraq as an uninhabitable wasteland, with the residue of the DU aerosol blowing in the wind and flowing in the waters to adjacent lands, a residue with a half-life of 4.5 billion years. Is this outlook too bleak?

Dr. Jawad Al-Ali, director of the Oncology Center at the largest hospital in Basra said the following in 2003. "Two strange phenomena have come about in Basra which I have never seen before. The first is double and triple cancers in one patient.... We have 58 families here with more than one person affected by cancer.... My wife has nine members of her family with cancer." He went on to point out that these were families with no history of cancer. After Gulf War I, the United Kingdom's Atomic Energy Authority estimated that DU contamination could kill half a million Iraqis.

Conclusions

I suspect the military-industrial complex will stonewall admitting the effects of DU for as long as possible to avoid accepting responsibility, not to mention liability, for their reckless actions. When John Hanchette, a founding editor of USA Today tried to publish stories about DU, he received a phone call from the Pentagon asking him to desist. He was later replaced at USA Today. The World Health Organization's chief expert on radiation and health had his report on DU suppressed. Dr. Asaf Durakovic, then a colonel in the U.S. Army, was asked to lie about the risks of DU to humans. So the stonewalling will continue, even as cancers rage among our soldiers and Iraqi civilians, even as our soldiers die, or commit suicide to escape the horrific pain, even as birth defects proliferate across Iraq and among our veterans.

But what of that? DU is a moneymaker for corporations like ATK. And turning DU into munitions helps the government solve a big problem-what to do with mountains of DU it must store and, by law, keep out of the environment. What better solution than giving it free to the munitions makers, who then sell the munitions back to Uncle Sam at a handsome profit? Everyone wins.

Unless we continue to fight for the truth, and to cry out for justice, our soldiers and Iraqi civilians will suffer and die in increasing numbers. Estimates of how many may die in Iraq are truly staggering - up to 11% of Iraq's 27 million population. This is a massive crime against humanity that remains in the shadows.
